This volume is the result of a session held at the Theoretical Archaeology Group Conference, Reading 1995 (fAG) entitled Northern Exposure: Interpretative Devolution and the Iron Age of the British Isles (the terms 'island' and 'archipelago' have been used instead of 'British Isles' to disclaim the imperial connotations inherent in the use of the latter). Four of the contributors have based their papers on their presentations at the session (Piccini, Robbins, Webster, Willis), two speakers have written entirely new papers (parker Pearson, Hingley), while the remaining contributors widen the geographic and thematic coverage constrained by the demands of the TAG session (Adams, Armitt, Bevan, Chadwick, Collis, Giles, Jackson, Matthews).
