rtefacts
are
play
ing
an increasingly significant role in
our
understandings of
life on
the
Roman frontier,
especially
of
the range of ac
tivities that took place
at military
sites
and
of
the
people who made up these communities. This paper discusses
some of
the problems and the
advantages of using artefacts to investigate the
se
communit
ies
and
particularly
to quantify the
civilian population
inside Roman military bases. [First paragraph]
