Chapter 3: Interpreting the Roman coin assemblage from Insula IX

chapter
posted on 2024-07-08, 15:30 authored by Philippa Walton

750 Roman coins were recovered during the 18 seasons of excavation in Insula IX. These coins have been published in three phased reports on the site (Besly 2006, 81–5, 289–90; 2011, 96–9; 2020, 163–4), with a supplementary list of coins dating to later than a.d. 117 included as Besly 2020, 165. The archaeological contexts in which the coins were found were discussed in detail within  these  reports.  Therefore,  this  summary  aims  to  analyse  the  coins  from  Insula  IX  as  a  single  assemblage  and  to  place  them  within  some  sort  of  broader  chronological,  geographical  and functional context.
