Coral is not frequently found in excavations. Only in recent periods has it become an object of specific study. Ancient sources stress its use in medicine and its prophylactic function. It was mainly attested to in sanctuaries, where it was found in the form of un-worked fragments. Adonis and Hera both show a deep relationship with coral, however coral was not exclusive only to them, but to other Gods as well. Bits of un-worked coral were also recovered in the Phoenician sanctuary of Malta. Its presence can be explained in connection with the cult of Hera (who was worshipped in the sanctuary beginning in the Late Hellenistic Age). It could also have been used for votive offerings in order to protect navigators.
