Labour rights (of migrants)

chapter
posted on 2025-05-29, 16:11 authored by Arwen Joyce

International labour rights standards and norms aim to protect migrant workers and set minimum standards for their treatment. These standards and norms can be found principally in UN conventions, and International Labour Organization conventions, protocols, and recommendations. Regional free movement zones and bilateral labour agreements are two ways states have sought to facilitate and promote cross-border labour mobility, although the latter are concerned first with ensuring access to labour and only secondarily with the protection of migrant workers’ rights. Challenges remain with respect to the protection of the rights of undocumented and low-wage migrant workers, including domestic workers.
