This chapter investigates the strengths and weaknesses of William Cavendish, duke of Newcastle, as a royalist general. It will evaluate his contribution to the royalist war effort and examine the multi-faceted nature of his command over what was the largest royalist army of the first civil war. It also contextualizes his forces' military engagements and the nature of their adversaries.
