Craft production and the Meroitic State

conference contribution
posted on 2018-02-08, 10:09 authored by David N. Edwards
New data as well as important synthetic studies have, in recent years, opened the way for a reappraisal of the organization, and significance of many forms of craft manufacture within the Meroitic realm. This paper examines a number of general issues concerning Meroitic craft production and their potential as a focus of study. Some possible lines of research are explored concerning more ‘industrial’ forms of pottery production, their production context, and possible links to other crafts and craft producers. The significance of some potmarks is discussed and questions are also raised concerning craft identities and craft ‘castes’ within and after the Meroitic period, and their potential urban origins.
