In this paper, we investigate how restaurants are inscribed by ‘heteronormative rhythms’ that
privilege the dining experience of couples and families. Drawing on Henri Lefebvre’s theory
of rhythmanalysis, we explore the dining experiences of solo diners and how they negotiate
heteronormative spaces to mitigate marketplace exclusion and social arrhythmia.
