UK digital visual management: an analysis in healthcare research
A global systematic literature review of transitions to digitalisation reflected how visual management tools (VMTs) support healthcare staff in operational decision-making. This research is relevant beyond healthcare because it acts as an exemplar for other sectors. A finding within the cohort of papers was that Asian research contained a higher concentration of electronic VMTs compared with the UK. This paper further explores the phenomenon of a continental divide in VMT research. Synergies and trade-offs in meeting sustainability development goals (SDGs) are explored through staff experiences of using technology. The capacity for creating and maintaining sustainable technological VMT innovations and digital efficiency is considered in terms of user-eudaimonia, whilst supporting patient safety. Findings evidence that essential to each cohort of research papers was the importance of user-engagement and gradual implementation to anticipate potential problems. In terms of adequately supporting efficiency, safety, and sustainabilityin UK healthcare, commitment to digitalisation is missing.
