Abiodun Alao’s book is indeed an interesting contribution to the literature on religious
violence in Nigeria. It is a country where religious and ethnic divides come into play at all
times. While a lot has been written on religious issues in the country focusing more on
relating Islam to violence, he goes a step further, and engages Islam, Christianity and
traditional religion on a balanced platform. Alao explains the fluid nature of religious
violence that makes the decision on what to include or not challenging, particularly the
blurred boundaries between and among religions across time and practices.
