This is a collection of articles selected from the presentations and posters at a postgraduate

and early career researcher conference held at the University of Nottingham in 2009. It

includes twelve short articles which, according to the preface, constitute half of the

conference papers, as well as four shorter contributions resulting from conference posters.

There is no evident organisation of these articles. Because of their number I will not examine each article individually but rather discuss them according to their apparent approaches.
