[First paragraph] The number of patients aged 65 years and over admitted to emergency departments is increasing rapidly and this population is also at high risk of hospital admission following an emergency department attendance. In 2015, patients aged over 65 years old made up over 23% of the total attendance at emergency departments across the UK, of whom 47% were admitted (Hospital Episode Statistics, 2015).
