[First paragraph] The number of patients aged 65 years
and over admitted to emergency
departments is increasing rapidly
and this population is also at high
risk of hospital admission following
an emergency department attendance. In
2015, patients aged over 65 years old made
up over 23% of the total attendance at
emergency departments across the UK, of
whom 47% were admitted (Hospital Episode
Statistics, 2015).
