[First paragraph] I have, for many years been fascinated by the figure of the gay English playwright Joe Orton. The
August 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of Orton’s murder, in 1967, by his lover Kenneth Halliwell.
The summer of 2017 also marked the 50th anniversary of the (partial) decriminalisation of
homosexuality in England and Wales. Those two anniversaries do not completely frame what I want
to say in this paper, but they haunt it a little.
