Discusses the proposal in the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill 2011 to introduce a new offence of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and whether its introduction is justified. Comments on the nature of the proposed offence and the Government's rejection of increasing the maximum penalty for dangerous driving as an alternative to introducing the new offence. Considers whether the focus should be on punishing drivers for the standard of their driving or the results of their actions and, if the latter, the offence options open to Parliament.
