Classifying archaeological artefacts is a time-consuming and costly process, requiring specialist knowledge, frequently resulting in only small proportions of the available evidence being recorded and analysed. Artificial intelligence has the potential to address this problem, by carrying out the tasks of identifying and classifying artefacts and so facilitating more holistic recording of big archaeological data by non-specialists.
