The first chapter contains a review of Group VIII metal acyl complexes, with the emphasis on the methods of preparation. The reactions of several aldehydes with some platinum(0) compounds have been investigated and found to produce di-acyl complexes of platinum(II). The products from these reactions have not been previously reported. The reactions of ?diketones with some platinum(0) compounds have also been investigated and found to produce cycloperoxo complexes of platinum(II). An investigation of the interactions of a variety of unsaturated alcohols with tetrakis (triphenylphosphine)- platinum(0) has shown the reactions to yield di-acyl complexes of platinum(II). A series of di-phenoxides of platinum(II) have been prepared by the reactions of phenols and catechols with tetrakis (triphenylphosphine) platinum(0). None of the products from these reactions have been previously reported. A study of the reactions of a number of ? diketonato derivatives of rhodium(I) with the powerful dienophiles tetracyanoethylene, fumaronitrile, maleic anhydride and dichloromaleic anhydride has shown the products to be rhodium olefin complexes. Many of the products have not been previously reported.
