Three experiments on vocabulary access in the description of pictures revealed various properties of the response utterances affecting the latency of their production. These results support a hierarchical model of the organisation of long-term verbal memory. A corpus of spontaneous speech from different social contexts was then analysed phonologically with reference to these findings; the implications of this analysis for understanding the production of speech are considered.
