An investigation was carried out into the formation of alkyl tin compounds from basic, aqueous solutions of tin(II). By varying the composition of the reactants and reaction conditions, the yields of alkyl tin compounds were optimised and mechanisms were postulated for the reactions involved. The Raman spectra of tin(II) solutions were recorded and discussed. The properties of alkyl tin oxides are described, with particular reference to the vibrational spectra of dialkyl tin oxides. The preparations of dialkyl tin dihalides from dialkyl tin oxides are discussed, and an examination made of the infrared and Raman spectra of the products. Single crystal vibrational spectra of dimethyl tin dichloride and dimethyl tin dibromide were recorded and assignments made of the spectra which were obtained.
