Chapter 1 reviews the literature concerning the synthesis and reactivity of late transition metal amide complexes, particular mention being given to their synthesis via functionalised phosphine ligands. The preparation and characterisation of the new bidentate ligands Ph2PCH2CH2NHR [R = tBu, CH2Ph, CH(Me)Ph] and Ph2PCH2CH2N(CH2Ph)2 and their corresponding hydrochloride salts are reported in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses the synthesis of some platinum and palladium complexes of the ligands Ph2PCH2NHtBu (R = tBu, p-tol) and Ph2PCH2OH. The structure of cis-[Pt(Ph2PCH2OH)2Cl2] was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The reactivity of some of these complexes towards the formation of bimetallic complexes and deprotonations is discussed. The reactions of ligands Ph2PCH2CH2NHR and their hydrochloride salts, forming a variety of both platinum and palladium complexes, are reported in Chapter 4. The structures of both cis-[Pt(Ph2PCH2CH2NHtBu)(Ph2PCH2CH2NHtBu)Cl]Cl and [Pd(Ph2PCH2CH2NHtBu)Cl2] were determined by X-ray diffraction. Attempts to deprotonate some of the platinum complexes to form platinum amide complexes are also discussed. Chapter 5 describes the syntheses of several new iron(II) and ruthenium(II) complexes of the ligands Ph2PCH2CH2NHR, their chirality and the reactivity of these complexes towards deprotonation.
